Radon is a dangerous, invisible, odorless, tasteless gas that, with many years of exposure, can cause lung cancer. But it can't cause "poisoning" or short-term respiratory illness, experts say, despite claims made by the producers of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" as a reason for detonating the home of Dan and Dawn Miller this week east of Cheyenne.
Nor does having high levels of radon in one's home ever necessitate the use of explosives to fix the problem, experts say. Still, all commended the charity of the show in providing a family with a new home. But they urged Laramie County homeowners not to panic if they detect levels of radon above the recommended lower limit set by the Environmental Protection Agency.
That's good news for county homeowners, since the county is in the EPA's highest-risk zone for radon exposure.
