Homes can host many hidden poisons

You don't have to live near a toxic waste dump to come in close contact with hazardous materials, experts say. And if families want to minimize the hidden dangers within their homes, they need to be informed.

According to a recent report from the National Academy of Sciences, radon is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, after smoking.

"For nonsmokers, it's the leading cause," said Joe Lally, environmental health specialist with Sauk, Adams, Juneau and Wood counties.
