Noting that January is National Radon Action Month, Barron County Department of Health and Human Services is encouraging everyone in the county to learn more about radon and the harmful effects of exposure to this odorless radioactive gas than comes from the ground.
The National Academy of Sciences presented its findings back in 1998 about radon in a report entitled "The Health Effects of Exposure to Indoor Radon." The report confirms that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, and that it is a serious public health problem, causing several thousand preventable lung cancer deaths each year.
