The silent, slow killer

Generous mines of silver and gold brought people to the Rocky Mountains in the 1800s. But little did those prospectors realize that with all the precious metal comes rich deposits of decaying uranium, which produce some of the highest levels of cancer-causing radon gas in the United States. Although more people than ever are aware of the dangers of radon, many people still choose to ignore it, or have no idea at all what radon is, said Doug Cladder, director of the Center for Environmental Research and Technology.
