Fullerton YMCA building to be tested for radon

FULLERTON – The city plans to conduct radon testing at the Fullerton YMCA – just as the group is embarking on a $3 million renovation campaign – after high levels of the dangerous gas were found at a neighboring facility.

The city's tennis center will also be tested.

Radon, a radioactive gas that may be found in drinking water and indoor air, is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Higher than acceptable radon levels were found by a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers study at the Child Guidance Center, at 2050 Youth Way, city officials said. The City Council decided last month to relocate that facility along with the adjacent Fullerton Community Nursery School.

But high radon levels at one facility do not affect radon levels at surrounding properties, experts say.

Nursery school parents oppose the relocation, because radon levels can be fixed.
