West School will not open for the 2020-21 school year under action taken by the Grand Forks School Board last night. The board agreed to keep the doors locked due to elevated radon levels inside the building.
School officials closed West earlier this year to fix water and mold problems in the district's oldest elementary school. In order to fix the radon problem the district would need to invest one-point-five million dollars into a new HVAC system. Buildings and Ground Director Chris Arnold says there's no easy solution to the problem. Arnold says the current system is 50 years old and serviceable parts are no longer available.
