PORTLAND, Maine — Independent Sen. Angus King of Maine is part of a group of senators taking the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to task for failing to protect public housing residents from radon gas.
The bipartisan group is requesting a meeting with agency Secretary Ben Carson to address the failure "to chart a path forward to resolve this serious health hazard."
Radon is a colorless, odorless gas that is the second most common cause of lung cancer, and the leading cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers.
The senators also are asking for the president to include funds in the 2021 budget to help public housing agencies test for and mitigate high radon levels in federally subsidized housing.
