Two Rivers Public Health Department: Radon Awareness Month

Date Published: 01/16/2020 [Source]

Emergency Response Coordinator and Health Educator Katherine Mulligan from Two Rivers Public Health Department joins Sara Kirkley in the studio to share her knowledge of radon, how to test for it and steps to take if it is present in your home.

Radon is a cancer-causing radioactive gas that is naturally occurring in the soil and bedrock below our homes. Because it is a gas, and gases rise into the atmosphere, radon can move through soil and into our homes. You cannot see, smell or taste radon. It is important to know the level of Radon in our homes, because radon is considered to be the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers.

Radon can be found throughout the United States, but Nebraska specifically has a very high incidence of radon in homes. Over half of the homes that test in Nebraska have levels above the "need to take action" level of 4.0. Homes with elevated radon levels have been found in all areas of our state.
