Short-term radon test kits are available on a first-come, first-serve basis in Brown County beginning Monday, Jan. 6.
Radon is the leading environmental cause of cancer deaths in the United States and the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. More than 21,000 lung cancer deaths are attributed to radon each year in the U.S.
About two in five Minnesota homes have dangerous radon gas levels. More than 75% of homes tested in Brown County have a radon level greater than 4 pCi/L, which is considered a risk. If your home's level is at or above 4 pCi/L, you should consider verification testing and having a radon mitigation system installed.
Fortunately, the risk is largely preventable with testing and repairing radon problems. State health officials said every home should be tested and re-tested every 2 to 5 years.
