Six months after rental moratorium, Iowa City approves new rules for rental housing

Date Published: 11/21/2019 [Source]

A 10-month rental permit moratorium was instituted by the Iowa City Council. This moratorium went into effect on May 30th 2019.

City leaders claim the rental cap and other measures were necessary to stabilize and preserve the character of core neighborhoods.

One of the measures that the Iowa City Council approved was an ordinance requiring testing for radon in all single-family detached structures and duplexes. This is to be done before any rental permit is issued or renewed.

A radon mitigation system will be required if detection levels are above a certain limit. Otherwise, testing will be done at least every 8 years.
