As part of Radon Action Month, the governor of Connecticut is urging homeowners to become informed about and test for radon.

The EPA estimates that over 20,000 lung cancer deaths a year are attributed to radon. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among nonsmokers.

The Newtown Health District has a limited quantity of free radon test kits for residents of Newtown, Bridgetown, and Roxbury. Residents can also obtain a discounted kit from the American Lung Association of Connecticut.

Radon can also be found in groundwater. The Brookfield Health Department urges its residents due to the Brookfield area's high risk for radon in water.
