Residents urged to test homes for radon

Date Published: 01/11/2009 [Source]

January is National Radon Action Month. The US EPA is urging the public to increase their awareness about and test their homes for radon.

According to a Brown County, Wisconsin, home inspector who does radon testing, "There's no area in Brown County that has zero (levels of radon)."

"The lowest test I've had was 1.6, but then there was one in De Pere that was 23. You get into Luxemburg, I've had it into the 40s."

Radon levels vary based on geography and building attributes like age, size, construction methods, and materials. Neighboring homes or buildings could have very different levels, so the only way to know for sure is to test.

The Brown County Health Department offers short-term test kits to homeowners for a $5 donation.
